Implant dentistry is the practice of replacing a root of a tooth in order to restore the complete function and appearance of natural teeth. There are several applications for dental implants and multiple options for final restorations. The end result often depends on the number of teeth that are being replaced with implants.
A natural tooth has roots and a crown (which is the visible part of the tooth). A single dental implant that serves as a prosthetic replacement of a missing tooth consists of three parts:
the implant device itself (which is inserted directly into the bone)
the piece that connects the implant device to the third part (called an abutment)
the restoration, which can be a crown, bridge, or denture
In the implant process, a titanium screw - similar in size to the root of a natural tooth - is placed in the patient's jawbone where the natural tooth is missing. The restoration will be attached on top of this screw, which can now function as a new tooth.
To determine if you are a good candidate for implant dentistry, you can start by scheduling a consultation here at Roberts & Hall Dentistry. During this appointment, we will examine your teeth and gums and evaluate bone density and quality. The success of a dental implant is highly connected with gum tissue health and underlying bone quality. For that reason, the ideal candidate needs to be in good general and oral health. Dr. Roberts & Dr. Hall will utilize x-rays and a CT scan to ensure that there is enough bone structure to support the implant.
Furthermore, if you are a good candidate, we will devise the most appropriate implant dentistry treatment plan for you. The next step is to place the appropriate number of implants in your jawbone. The implant will be surrounded and covered with gum tissue to allow time for new bone to grow into the threads, locking the implant in place. This process, known as osseointegration, takes a minimum of three months. After three months of healing time, an impression is taken and the fabrication process of the final restoration begins. Depending on every patient's needs and the restoration chosen, the treatment time will vary.
After treatment, Dr. Roberts & Dr. Hall will guide and help you to develop the best care plan for your teeth. Periodic follow-up visits will be scheduled to monitor your implant, teeth and gums to make sure they are healthy.

Dental implants are like a mount for your replacement teeth. They're surgically inserted underneath your gums and connected to your jawbone. This provides added support for you false teeth and keeps them from moving around inside of your mouth.
